Transition was born to face the challenges of peak oil, economic contraction and climate change; it is a bottom-up initiative, community-based scheme. Nowadays, Transition initiatives are widespread: from the Netherlands to the USA , to UK Transition Towns and Universities.

Transition initiatives generally include elements of permaculture. The world permaculture comes from “permanent culture” – that is, how to live sustainably on the planet, in harmony with nature. Permaculture works within an ethical framework to understand how nature works; by understanding those basic principles, it designs integrated system that may provide food, shelter and energy in a healthy and efficient way.
